About the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree

The online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for individuals who want to pursue a master's degree and have the option to earn teacher certification. This program is ideal for those who wish to move into administration or positions of leadership in the education setting.

Students have two pathways in the MAT:

  • Path I - Master's Degree with Teacher Certification
  • Path II - Master's Degree (without Teacher Certification)

Degree Requirements & Resources

30-36 credit hours

Graduation Requirements

Path I - Master's Degree with Teacher Certification

  • Completion of professional development/certification course work, required testing, and supervised clinical experience.
  • Issuance of a 5-Year Standard Texas Eduator Certificate prior to administration of the comprehensive exam.
  • Pass a written comprehensive exam.

Path II - Master's Degree (without Teacher Certification)

  • Completion of all required coursework.
  • Pass a written comprehensive exam.

Program Admissions

Application deadlines:

  • August 1 for Fall admission
  • December 1 for Spring admission
  • May 1 for Summer admission

Scholarships & Program Cost

There are numerous scholarships and financial aid programs available to MAT degree students.

 

Note: Please refer to Texas Education Agency (TEA) specific requirements for becoming a teacher in the state of Texas. To teach in a Texas public school, a person must hold a valid Texas Educator Certificate, as specified in 19 TAC Chapter 231. Certification requirements are subject to change per TEA/SBEC decisions. WTAMU’s Office of Teacher Preparation.

Note: For all certification areas, credit for EDPD 5350 and/or EDPD 6307 will only be awarded for WTAMU PACE modules.
