Professional Profile
Dr. Kim joined the Department of Education in 2022. She received a B.S. in Foreign Language Education from the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, in Korea, in 1994, an M.A. in Reading and Literacy from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2010, and a Ph.D. in Language, Reading, and Culture from the University of Arizona, in 2020. Prior to academia, she taught at public elementary schools in Seoul, Korea.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Kim teaches reading courses, children’s literature courses, and early childhood education courses in the teacher education program. Her teaching focuses on promoting children’s literature in Reading and Literacy. She serves on the Standing Committee of Global Citizenship Education at the National Council for Teachers of English. She is an executive board member of Worlds of Words and serves as a reviewer for WoW Review: Reading Across Cultures.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Kim’s research interest focuses on critical analysis of children’s literature and exploring reading and literacy programs for a diverse society. She conducted research projects exploring critical visual literacy through illustrations of picturebooks, examining preservice teachers’ responses to global children’s literature, and developing transnational literacy programs. Her studies were shared through conference presentations and articles.
