Professional Profile
Dr. Marilyn Miller is a board-certified family nurse practitioner and assistant professor of nursing. She brings a wealth of diverse clinical expertise to the university, with years specialized experience in hematology, oncology, and gastroenterology. Notably, her clinical background includes working at MD Anderson Cancer Center within the Benign Hematology department, where she focused on the complex management of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms in the cancer patient population. In 2019 she received special training earning a certificate in Cancer Genomics and Cancer Risk Assessment from the City of Hope.
Dr. Miller earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Amarillo College in 1995. She then completed both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2007, and her Master of Science in Nursing in 2011 from West Texas A&M university. Dr. Miller culminated her academic journey by earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Texas at Arlington, in 2021.
She is a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty, Panhandle Nurse Practitioners Association, Sigma Theta Tau, Texas Nurse Practitioners Association, and American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Miller is deeply passionate about mentoring nurse practitioner students, guiding them as they develop into confident, compassionate, and skilled clinicians. As an alumna, she is thrilled to teach at the university that provided the foundational steppingstones for her own career as a dedicated nurse and practitioner. She feels privileged to give back to her alma mater by shaping and supporting the next generation of nurse practitioners.
She currently teaches Pharmacotherapeutics, Primary Care I, II, & III, Issues in Nurse Practitioner Role Development, and Nursing Research at the graduate level.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Miller’s research and creative interests are in advancing specialized clinical care and improving community healthcare outcomes. Her primary areas of focus include:
- Advanced Clinical Specialties: Genomics, cancer risk assessment, hematology, and gastroenterology disorders
- Health Promotion & Policy: Disease Prevention, holistic health, and addressing critical issues in rural health care delivery
