Dr. Whitney Dowd is a board-certified family nurse practitioner and assistant professor of nursing. She is a graduate of WTAMU School of Nursing - in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and again in 2013 with a Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner. Whitney is a lifelong resident of Amarillo, Texas, she brings a strong connection to her community and a passion for service into her academic and clinical work. She has broad clinical experience, including a special focus on pediatric and neonatal care, and is dedicated to delivering compassionate, family-centered care. Her background informs her comprehensive approach to both teaching and patient care, with a commitment to excellence and equity in nursing practice. Whitney is a member of the Panhandle Nurse Practitioner Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and TNP.
Teaching and Related Service
As an educator, Dr. Dowd is committed to preparing future nurse providers and leaders through competency-based instruction and learning. She incorporates real-world clinical insights into her teaching, particularly in areas of caring for underserved communities. Dr. Dowd fosters a classroom environment that emphasizes critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, and reflective practice. She currently teaches Nursing Theories, Pharmacotherapeutics, Primary Care I,II, & III, and Issues in Nursing at the graduate level.Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Dowd’s scholarly interests focus on health equality and culturally responsive care in nursing practice. She is interested in exploring research in Women's Health, nursing education, and improving health outcomes for underserved communities. She contributes to the advancement of nursing knowledge through scholarly presentations, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-based projects that link academic research with real-world application. Dr. Dowd is passionate about transforming insights into meaningful action that benefits both students and the communities they will serve.
