WT Athletic Director Scholars (WTADS)

West Texas A&M University is introducing an exciting program—the WT Athletic Director Scholars (WTADS) program. Please share the following letter with your district’s AD. Additionally, to update our database, we ask that you please share the name and email address of your district’s AD with us. You can do so via email, (president@wtamu.edu) phone (806-651-2121) or online form.

Placing our trust in high school athletic directors is the impetus of the new program, allowing athletic director recommendations of one student-athlete to WT through the WTADS program.

West Texas A&M University boasts one of the top NCAA Division II athletic programs in the nation. Our coaches recruit prospective walk-on student-athletes from all across the state. However, we also recognize that talented student-athletes can be overlooked during the traditional recruiting process, particularly in more rural areas of Texas. We acknowledge that those who know these students best, such as your AD, and are willing to vouch for their drive to succeed is a reliable and trustworthy indicator of potential, which we value. It is the WT way.

Through WTADS, the student-athlete recommendation from the high school(s) you represent will be automatically admitted to the University, be eligible for financial aid and considered a walk-on by our coaching staff in their sport. To that end, in essence, your athletic director becomes an admissions officer for a student-athlete who might not otherwise have an opportunity to become a collegiate athlete. Your choices can change the trajectory of people’s lives, impacting entire families and the generations to follow.

While we will make exceptions within reasonable bounds, applicants must meet the Texas Uniform Admission Policy, have a minimum of 2.0 cumulative high school GPA and meet ONE of the following:

  • High School Class Rank – Top 30%
  • 3.0 Cumulative High School GPA (4.0 Scale)
  • 21 ACT Composite Score OR 1060 SAT Composite Score

Additionally, student-athletes must:

  • Be eligible by the NCAA Eligibility Center
  • Pass an athletic physical

The following additional benefits are worth noting:

  • Application Fee Waiver
  • Express Admission to WT
  • Scholarship Consideration

All you need to do to recommend the walk-on student-athlete is fill out the online form. We will contact the student-athlete you recommend as a potential WT student and let them know of your confidence in them and our confidence in you. Once we have received your recommendation, we will walk each person individually through the remaining processes. For the fall of 2024 class, we would encourage you to submit your recommendation as soon as possible and no later than May 1, 2024. The space available in various sports may be limited so please consider making your recommendation as soon as possible.
