SPAN 1412: Elementary Spanish II
Online
Continuation of SPAN 1411. This course focuses on developing your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Spanish while expanding your vocabulary and grammar knowledge. You will also explore the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world, gaining a deeper understanding of its diverse traditions and perspectives.
SPAN 2315: Heritage Speakers II

This course will enhance your Spanish language skills by providing you with new and important contexts for the use of Spanish in the USA. Through various forms of media, such as non-fiction, journalism, and films, you will be able to address questions about immigration and cultural borders.
SPAN 2371: Spanish for the Professions

This course helps you gain the vocabulary and communication skills you need to succeed in today’s global workplace. Through interactive activities and real-world scenarios, you will practice using Spanish in professional settings such as business, healthcare, education, and more - preparing you to connect confidently with Spanish-speaking clients, colleagues, and communities.
SPAN 3315: Spanish Culture & Civilization
In-Person - Dr. Eduardo Huaytan-Martinez
This course explores 20th-century Spanish history and culture through its most influential artistic movements. We begin with the poetry of the Generation of ‘98 and Generation of ‘27, examining how poets reflected Spain’s search for renewal. We then turn to the Franco period, analyzing key works of narrative that reveal the struggles and resilience of Spain under dictatorship. Finally we dive into La Movida Madrilena, an explosion of creativity in post-Franco Spain, exploring its films, fashion, and music.
SPAN 4385: Hispanic & Latin American Film
In-Person - Dr. Lau Romero
This course is designed for students to reflect on the meaning(s) of Latinx identity in America, moving from Mexico to Chile, including Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Argentina. To achieve this goal, students will watch a series of films, documentaries, performances, and music videos, accompanied by a set of critical thinking questions that will explore the topic of “latinidad” as an identity and the construction of Latino America through sociopolitical and economic borders.
SPAN 4392: Selected Studies - “Treason in Translation”
In-Person - Dr. Lau Romero
This course is designed to provide students with the basic principles of English-to-Spanish (and vice-versa) translation. Throughout the semester, students will learn to distinguish and work with different types of translation, including literary texts and everyday documents. Additionally, students will put into practice said knowledge by working with real cases and creating a final project in which they identify and propose a solution to linguistic needs within the university.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, and studying Spanish also provides the opportunity to develop cultural competencies and learn about the Spanish-speaking world more broadly. This course will provide an introduction to speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish. You will also begin to learn about the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world.
SPAN 2313 – Spanish for Heritage Speakers I* (3 Credits) (Hybrid: In-person or online)

This course will enhance your Spanish language skills by providing you with new and important contexts for the use of Spanish. You will also gain further insight into the complex cultural dynamic of Spanish speakers in the United States. Through various forms of media such as literature, non-fiction, journalism, film, you will be able to address questions about bilingualism, immigration, national and cultural borders that will simultaneously expand your language proficiency.

SPAN 2371 – Professions Spanish* (3 Credits) (online)

Spanish for the Professions is a course emphasizing vocabulary and structures necessary for communication within the context of the working world. Topics include health & wellness, consumerism & marketing, information technology, education, communication, human resources, and agriculture. The course will focus heavily on engaging students in real-world scenarios (such as role-play, individualized vocabulary, presentations, CV and Resume in Spanish, etc.) and relevant contexts for skills development.

SPAN 3314 - Latin American Culture and Civilization* (3 credits) (Hybrid: In-person or online)

This course will explore contemporary Latin American culture in various contexts through literature, nonfiction, cinema, telenovelas and music. The course will emphasize social, racial and gender representations in the region. This discussion-based course will be conducted in Spanish and is intended for students who wish to sharpen their communication and comprehension skills working with authentic cultural materials.

SPAN 4320 - Advanced Spanish Grammar* (3 credits) (Hybrid: In-person or online)

In this course you will learn to identify and use challenging Spanish grammatical structures and their technical terms. You will learn to explain the uses of each grammatical form and will be able to identify the structures in a wide variety of literary genres and cultural contexts. You will also use this knowledge of Spanish in written, creative/ research projects.

SPAN 4355 - Spanish American Literature* (3 credits) (Hybrid: In-person or online)

This course is a survey of Latin American literature from the 20th Century to the present. We will be reading novels and short stories from Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Chile. Through our readings we will gain further insight into the diversity of Latin American regional cultures, the region’s conflicted history and cultural traditions and the issues it presently faces in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, and social class.
