Time Management

Time management can be a difficult balancing act. As a student you already have your first taste of what time management, and possibly even poor time management, can look like. Adding in factors such as employment, parenthood, and more only add to the stress of managing your time.

Here are a few tips and recommendations on how to navigate managing your time. As a student you have many deadlines to keep you on track. Now, whether or not you manage to meet these deadlines is another story, but the deadlines are there so that you know to keep yourself on a certain timeline. That’s all to say that you can set yourself deadlines at work or in your professional life! If you’re a student currently start implementing some of these good habits now.

The first tip is to create yourself some deadlines. You may have a pretty straightforward deadline if a project is due, so try to be prepared at least one day before that deadline in case something comes up in between and you can’t work on things when you thought you could. Sometimes asking your supervisor for a deadline is another way to keep yourself on track, especially if having something done “soon” means something different to your boss than it does to you.

Another tip, is to remind yourself of those upcoming deadlines. For example, I might set myself a reminder one week before that deadline so that I can make sure to get started before the day it is due, especially if it is a more extensive project.

Lastly, figure out a way to keep track of these deadlines. Some like to use their phone calendar, some an outlook calendar, and others a written notebook. Whichever way works for you make sure to stick with it so that you can keep all your information stored safely in one place.
