Professionalism Redefined

Although suits and ties may be the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear that word, you should know that it is so much more! Let’s learn some staples of professionalism below.

Professionalism is an attitude. It is showing up to work with a positive mindset, ready to tackle whatever comes your way at work or school. Complaining about your coworkers or your job, in general, does not make you professional even if it is the norm.

Professionalism is staying calm under pressure. If you can keep an even tone and stay kind when dealing with a disgruntled person, then you have used your professionalism skills.

Professionalism is courtesy. Showing you care about those around you enough to be self-aware that your actions do in fact impact others is one way to show you are a professional. Asking how you can help is always a great way to show you care about those around you and truly be professional.

Professionalism is respecting others. Even if you don’t agree with someone’s viewpoint you can listen and try to understand where they are coming from. Hopefully, this will form mutual respect between you and your coworkers or others you might interact with.

It is important to note that if you only judge professionalism by dress code, you are missing the point completely. Sure, dressing sharply can exemplify your actions and you should follow the dress code/norms of the place you work, but ultimately your actions are what truly define professionalism. The final tip on professionalism is that some people don’t look past what you are wearing to see your actions, so you may be judged on professionalism based on this aspect (think career fairs and interviews) where you don’t have the chance for your actions to prove your professionalism. In those cases, it is best to try to also “dress for success” to the best of your abilities. Check out the “Before the Interview” section of this webpage for tips on what to wear.
