Pitfalls in the Job Search

In many job search appointments with students and recent grads, we ask a few main questions to get to the root of why they aren’t getting called:

  1. Are you tailoring your resume and cover letter? Tailoring/targeting means that you highlight accomplishments and skills that align with the role description. This takes more time but in the end you will get more interviews.
  2. Have you actually applied? I know it sounds silly, but sometimes the fear of rejection leaves people stuck and afraid to actually start applying. Side note: you don’t need 100% of qualifications to apply for a position.

The last tip is not so much a pitfall, but a word of advice: Read carefully when applying and be sure to follow all necessary steps so that a small error doesn’t knock you out of the running.
