Equip Yourself with Experience

Did you know that according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 95% of employers said candidate experience is a factor in hiring decisions? The good news is that while you are in school, and even after graduation, gaining valuable work experience is possible!

It is never too early to start thinking about what you can do to equip yourself with the necessary skills and experiences to be successful in getting a job in your field upon graduation. Experience comes in the form of internships, part-time work, clubs/organizations, and community service work and gaining relevant work experience is not the only benefit.

The benefits of obtaining an internship or work experience in your major include:

  1. To obtain valuable work experience
  2. To see if you’re in the right major
  3. To earn money to pay for your college education
  4. To help you choose a career
  5. To earn academic credit
  6. To establish contacts for future employment opportunities
  7. For personal growth: confidence and to interact professionally
  8. To apply skills and knowledge you’ve learned in school
  9. To enhance and add to your classroom education
  10. To find out what it is really like to have a real full-time job

These are just some of the benefits that meaningful work experience can bring you. If you are not sure where to start, go through our How to Find an Internship Workshop.
