Career Development Ideas during Breaks

The holiday break is a great time to develop professionally because you have more time. Use this free time to get ahead instead of just falling into the TikTok abyss.

Option #1: Update or create a LinkedIn

LinkedIn can be a great place to learn from other professionals in your field. It’s also a great way to keep track of your jobs and accomplishments in a place that cannot be lost. Additionally, 3 people are hired through LinkedIn EVEY MINUTE! Check out this article on how to create an eye-catching LinkedIn profile.

Option #2: Network with your family and friends

I know the thought of chatting with Aunt Marla for 15 extra minutes may not sound exciting, but some of the best career conversations happen when you least expect it. Your family and friends could introduce you to a valuable connection that could lead to a job, internship, or informational interview.  The Muse offers some great thoughts on how to be a strategic network when it comes to the family.

Option #3: Research your industry

If you know what career or industry you want to go into, take the time to find out what key skills you need. One way to do this is by looking at job postings in your field or check out LinkedIn posts from people in that field. Then watch some YouTube videos, use LinkedIn learning, or consider an elective course that could be helpful.
