Am I Qualified?

You’re looking for a job and found a position that is interesting. You want to apply but you don’t meet all the requirements in the posting. You don’t want to waste your time applying if you won’t make the first cut, so how can you be sure you meet enough qualifications to be considered for a position? The short answer is, you can’t! However, there are a few things you can do to help yourself stand out if you want to apply for a position regardless of the number of qualifications you meet.

First, it is important to note that there are usually two levels of qualifications, minimum and preferred. Minimum qualifications are the company’s non-negotiables. For example, if you’re applying to be a delivery driver you must have a valid driver’s license so you will not even be considered for the job without one.

Preferred qualifications are the ones with ‘wiggle-room.’ These are all the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) the employer hopes their new hire has! It is likely that no one person has all of them, so do not disqualify yourself if you are interested. Remember that many of the KSAs are things you can learn on the job. Target your cover letter and resume to highlight all that you do have without making excuses for those you do not. Be sure to convey your enthusiasm for the company and their mission in your cover letter and any conversations. If the list of qualifications are not presented in these two categories, assume that all are preferred!

The best way to be considered for a position you don’t 100% match up with is to find a connection to that company. Who do you know that works there? Who do you know who knows someone who works there? This is a great way to get your resume in the right hands early in the process. If there is an applicant tracking system scoring your resume you may not stack up to the other candidates and your personal connection could help you land an interview.

The last bit of advice is for the women reading this tip. According to an article by The Undercover Recruiter, women are much less likely to apply for positions where they do not meet 100% of the stated qualifications, while most men will apply if they meet 60% or more. If this describes your approach, take the leap and apply! The first step to getting any job is to apply, so use the tips above to help increase your odds of making it to the interview stage.
