Addresses on Resumes

Did you know you don’t have to put your physical address on your resume and cover letter? Read on to find out a few reasons why it might be a good idea to leave it off.

It takes away the chance for biases based on what part of town you live in. We all have biases, some that we may be unaware of. Take the address off helps take that factor out.

They may be concerned with your commute time if they realize that you live far away from the place of business. You may be perfectly happy with your commute time, but you want to take that bit of possible doubt out of the equation.

Let’s go over a few more recommendations related to your location and address. I would recommend leaving your city and state on the resume if you are applying in the same city as the job’s location. I would also recommend mentioning in your cover letter if you are open to relocation if you’re applying for a position outside of your city or state. This will help the employer understand that’s not an issue for you so that you’re not passed over because the other candidates lived locally.

Another factor to be aware of is that there is a good chance you might have to disclose your address during the application process. Often your address will only be visible to the human resources department in that case. Make sure to put your true address on the application and in those cases you should give that information.
