Necessary Qualifications

  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Must be a Certified Peace Officer in the State of Texas and hold at least a Basic TCOLE certificate at the time of application and/or meet TCOLE section 217.1 Minimum Standard for Licensing
  • Must have good interpersonal communication skills, and satisfactory computer skills
  • Must be able to meet required physical challenges consistent with a patrol officer from state and university police agencies
  • Must be able to obtain a Texas driver's license for vehicle operation by the time of hire and be able to be an approved driver for the Texas A&M University System (with no more than three moving violations within the last three years)
  • Must be able to qualify with a firearm approved for use by the department's firearms officer
  • Must have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military, if served
  • Must not be on court ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class C misdemeanor
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense above the grade of Class C with in the last five years
  • Must never have been convicted at any time of a felony offense
  • Must pass a physical and psychological exam - if required by UPD
  • Must pass a vision test of 20/40-20/100 with glasses or 20/100-20/200 corrected with contact lenses, correction must be to 20/30 in both eyes
  • Must never been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as defined by the Federal Gun Control Act
