Healthcare Career Promotion

Panhandle AHEC provides health career exploration presentations and hands-on activities to high school students by coming into the classroom or attending health career fairs.

Panhandle AHEC also distributes the Health Opportunites in Texas (HOT) Jobs directories to high school students to enhance their interest in becoming future healthcare professionals. The HOT Jobs directory lists a variety of health occupations, education needed to go into particular fields, potential salary information, and much more! Information in the directory is useful for high school and college students, academic and career counselors, as well as the general public. HOT Jobs directories are available in English and Spanish and can be provided to you at no cost.  Contact Stephanie Loya at sloya@wtamu.edu to order.  You can also visit the Health Opportunities in Texas (HOT) Jobs website at http://www.texashotjobs.org/

Junior Scholars

Panhandle AHEC Junior Scholars program partners with rural high school health science programs to provide health career exploration presentations and hands-on activities, mentorship opportunities, and access to AHEC hosted events such as college tours.  Through the Panhandle AHEC Junior Scholars program, rural high school health science programs and students may receive support for the purchase of testing resources, scrubs, and hands-on training equipment that students can use to practice the skills they have learned.

Rural Healthcare Student Mentorship

This coordinated effort is a great way for college-level health professions students to share with high school students their stories and paths to success for not only being accepted into college, but also into their intended healthcare professions programs.  Ideally, the mentorship program and information shared will encourage high school students to pursue healthcare careers and return to their hometowns to practice, thereby assisting their rural communities in building their medical workforces and capacities.
