“The most valuable part of McNair has been the mentorship we have received all throughout the summer, especially when it came to the graduate school search and application process. Having guidance on each component has made the process feel less overwhelming and has eased a lot of the anxiety I initially felt.”

“In Their words: Leadership Journey of Texas Panhandle Nonprofit Leaders”
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Leslie Ramos Salazar
This study examines the lived experiences of 16 nonprofit leaders in the Texas Panhandle and how their leadership practices strengthen communities and contribute to regional development. Using a qualitative narrative approach supported by Photovoice and interview methodology, the research draws from Transformational Leadership Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Systems Theory to explore how leaders motivate others, model resilience, and build collaboration in resource-limited settings. The findings reveal that nonprofit leadership in the Panhandle is deeply relational and rooted in authenticity, compassion, and a strong commitment to their mission. Leaders inspire action by connecting personal purpose to organizational goals and by creating trust among staff, volunteers, and community partners. Their work demonstrates that meaningful change happens not only through management and planning but through relationships built on empathy and shared purpose. Ultimately, this study highlights that nonprofit leadership in the Texas Panhandle is a community-centered, purpose-driven practice that transforms both individuals and systems through collaboration and belief.
