CANYON, Texas — Applications are now being accepted for the second fall cohort of West Texas A&M University’s online master’s of agriculture program.

The 100-percent-online graduate degree is designed for professionals who want to expand their career options, said Dr. Mallory Vestal, the Plug Piehl Professor of Agriculture in WT’s Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences.

“The program’s coursework and course timing has been strategically designed for the working professional,” Vestal said. “Faculty has specifically selected agriculture courses that will be beneficial for individuals working in all facets of the industry. And the timing of the coursework is laid out strategically to make a positive, manageable learning environment for full-time students and full-time professionals.”

Each cohort stretches two full years, including summer course offerings. Students are offered courses that encompass the natural, social and economic environments of agriculture combined into one comprehensive degree.

“This degree teaches the core practices of production for both crops and livestock, while branching into new areas such as innovative management, sustainability, agricultural issues and leadership development for a changing workforce,” Vestal said. “This unique approach allows the student to dive deeper into the multiple facets of agriculture.”

Scholarships are available for qualified students.

A special $3,000 scholarship, which is renewable for up to two years is available for agricultural extension agents through the WT Graduate School. Extension agents must register for a minimum of six credit hours per term and maintain a 3.0 grade point average. Applications are due Aug. 15 for the scholarship.

Meeting regional needs, particularly in agriculture, is a key mission of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

That plan is fueled by the historic, $125 million One West comprehensive fundraising campaign. To date, the five-year campaign — which publicly launched Sept. 23 — has raised about $110 million.
