CANYON, Texas — The average American spends $164.76 on Valentine’s Day, according to WalletHub. That means, collectively, Americans will spend more than $21.8 billion this year.

It’s hard to imagine such an astronomical number for one day of the year, but whether or not you celebrate Valentine’s Day, we could all use some tips on how to appreciate the ones we love without breaking the bank. Education Credit Union Buff $mart recently hosted a “Dating on a Budget” workshop featuring tips and tricks to do just that.

JJCastilloTreating someone to a nice date does not have to cost a huge amount. For example, more simple venues, like coffee dates, actually allow you to sit down and get to know your significant other in a more relaxed and engaged way. These are especially nice during the COVID-19 pandemic, where outdoor patios still offer the enjoyment of someone’s company in a safe, outdoor space.

You can even take your coffee to a park or some other nice outdoor venue to enjoy the outdoors even more.

Speaking of outdoors, the cheapest and most fun dates often involve some sort of outdoor experience. With the second largest canyon in the United States in our very own community, another great idea is utilizing the beauty of Palo Duro Canyon State Park to wow your date. Going on hikes, bike riding, horseback riding, or even star gazing are all cheap and easy ways to spend time with someone you care about.

Love movies, but hate the cost? Drive-in theater options offer cheaper options and as an added bonus, you can pack your own snacks and drinks to save even more money. Amarillo is home to the Tascosa Drive-in Movie Theater – an affordable and creative way to spend time with that special someone.

Another great date idea is volunteering in the community. These kinds of dates can sometimes be the most rewarding, as they show people’s true character and help others in need. There are various organizations around the Amarillo area where you can volunteer. For example, the Panhandle Adult Rebuilding Center (PARC) promotes self-worth and empowers the homeless population to take hold of life’s possibilities. By volunteering, you get to be an integral part in helping others while also getting to know your significant other a little better. Best of all? Kindness doesn’t cost a thing!

What about budget-friendly gift ideas?  Showing someone you care doesn’t have to cost a fortune. For example, simple and thoughtful gifts like a creative jar often mean more than the things money can buy. For this idea, simply create a list of what you like about your partner and place them individually into a jar. The number of reasons can represent a week, month, or even a year.

Another great gift idea is a simple candy basket. Collect your partner’s favorite candies into a small basket, or buy a pre-made one at your local store. You can make or buy a good candy basket for under $10.

You also can write “Open When” letters. These are letters meant to be opened at a certain time in their life, whether that’s when they’re feeling sad, excited, or unsure.

Last but not least, you can get that special someone the traditional flowers and chocolates. These don’t need to be extravagant to be thoughtful. A simple rose and candy can go a long way to show you care.

In short, treating someone to something special this Valentine’s Day does not need to cost a fortune. Often times the most thoughtful gifts are the ones that are homemade, simple or show your true character. Showing you appreciate those you love simply requires creativity and thoughtfulness, not necessarily a lot of money — a happy Valentine’s Day indeed!
