The jazz program at West Texas A&M University School of Music offers a dynamic and collaborative environment where students develop as performers, improvisers, and versatile musicians. Open to both music majors and non-majors, WT Jazz Ensembles provide students with the opportunity to perform in a variety of styles—including swing, bebop, Latin, funk, and contemporary jazz—while building fluency in improvisation, ensemble playing, and stylistic interpretation. Students perform regularly throughout the academic year, presenting repertoire that reflects both the rich tradition and continuing evolution of jazz.
Jazz Ensemble I is the premier large jazz ensemble at WTAMU, composed of advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The ensemble performs challenging repertoire spanning traditional big band literature and contemporary works, and regularly collaborates with guest artists and clinicians. Members are expected to demonstrate a high level of technical proficiency, stylistic awareness, and improvisational ability.
Jazz Ensemble I is directed by Dr. James Barger.Jazz Ensemble II provides a strong developmental environment for students building experience in jazz performance and improvisation.
