University gets high marks for academic accomplishments, value, service for veterans, more
CANYON, Texas — West Texas A&M University continues to rise in a well-regarded survey of colleges and universities.
Newly released rankings from U.S. News & World Report show that WT has climbed to No. 37 in the magazine’s 2027 Regional Universities (West) list, up from No. 50 for 2026. Among schools in Texas, WT ranks No. 7.
The University also rose to No. 22 and No. 3 in the state in the list of Top Public Schools in the West, up from No. 25 a year ago.
WT also ranks No. 6 in Best Value Schools and ties at No. 10 in Best Value for In-State Students in schools in the western quadrant of the country. Among Texas schools, WT ranks No. 4 and No. 1 in those respective categories.
The University also rose to No. 15 for Best Colleges for Veterans in the west, up from No. 25 a year ago. Among Texas schools, WT is No. 3 for veterans.
“WT consistently ranks very well among colleges and universities in Texas and across the country,” said Dr. Neil Terry, WT’s interim president. “The academic programs and educational experience offered at WT, coupled with our commitment to ensure that students graduate and succeed in their careers and communities, are at the heart of these rankings. Rankings are gratifying, but our ultimate measure of success is the value of a WT education and the difference our graduates make in the Texas Panhandle, across Texas and beyond.”
The University also tied at No. 46, and No. 11 in Texas, for Top Performers on Social Mobility, which tracks Pell Grant graduation rates and Pell Grant graduation rate performance.
In national rankings, WT’s College of Engineering tied at No. 140 in Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs (non-doctorate). That’s No. 8 among Texas schools. WT also earned rankings for its Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Business programs.
“WT is incredibly proud to receive external recognition,” said Dr. Amy Andersen, associate provost. “The rankings affirm the WT faculty and staff’s commitment to academic quality and student success.”
U.S. News’ Best Colleges rankings provide data-driven information and guidance to help prospective students and their families understand their higher education options.
Using a wide range of data sources, the national and regional rankings evaluate nearly 1,700 colleges and universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality. The formula uses data universally reported by schools or obtainable from third-party sources. Schools’ eligibility to be ranked is not contingent on participation in U.S. News’ surveys.
