CANYON, Texas — A philosophy professor from a Polish university will discuss civic responsibility in an upcoming Distinguished Lecture Series event at West Texas A&M University.
Dr. Eli Kramer will present “Lecturing on Academic Responsibility as Rome Burns” at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus.
Admission is free.
Kramer is a professor of philosophy at the University of Wrocław in Poland, the assistant director of The Cassirer Center for International Scholarship and Cooperation, and the director of strategic development and engagement for Palinode Productions.
“Wherever we fall on the political spectrum, I think many of feel stressed in what seems like an increasingly chaotic landscape,” said Dr. Laura Mueller, assistant professor of philosophy in the Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages in the Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities. “Universities have a constantly shifting foundation. Dr. Kramer’s talk will show us how philosophy and the humanities—and the tools they equip us with—can help us navigate our tension and reframe what we think of as our civic responsibility in a world rife with discord and change.”
Kramer, a Portland, Oregon, native, also will give a guest lecture in one of Mueller’s classes and will meet with members of the Philosophy Club while on campus.
His appearance is co-sponsored by the Department of English, Philosophy and Modern Languages and the Attebury Honors Program.
The Distinguished Lecture Series was created to enhance education at WT by inviting people of national prominence to speak to students and the community about important issues.
Addressing regional challenges and making an impact throughout the region and beyond are key components of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign’s new goal is to reach $175 million by 2025; currently, it has raised more than $170 million.
