CANYON, Texas — Current students at West Texas A&M University are working to make sure their incoming peers get off to the right start.
Black Student Union members are hosting a backpack drive, hoping to fill 100 satchels with school supplies, including pens, pencils, notecards, binders, sticky notes and more.
“Some students come to the University without a home and, often, without financial support from their parents,” said Amber Page, BSU secretary. “In providing students with these needed supplies, we will be supporting their academic success.”
Page said this is the first year BSU has held the donation drive, primarily targeting University departments but also community support.
“With additional support from around the campus and community, we hope that we can continue this drive every year,” Page said.
BSU will collect donations through July 31. To contribute, email wtamubsu@gmail.com.
Addressing the diverse needs of the region is a key component of the University’s long-term plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
