WT Student Selected for National, Statewide Scholarships

Contact: Dr. Mary Liz Brooks, mbrooks@wtamu.edu

CANYON, TexasHannah Franklin, West Texas A&M junior broadcast journalism major from Lubbock, was selected as a scholarship recipient for both the Texas High Plains Writers Amarillo scholarship and the Washington Media Scholars Foundation. Each scholarship awards $1,000 toward her WT expenses this year.

After learning of the foundation, Franklin submitted an essay and recommendation letter from WT media communication professor Dr. Mary Liz Brooks, which then led to an interview over the phone.

“I feel very excited and blessed to have been awarded this scholarship,” Franklin said. “I feel like this department is constantly pushing out information to benefit the students and inform us.”

Texas High Plains Writers sponsored three writing contests for students enrolled at WT and other area schools. Franklin was the recipient of both the essay and creative nonfiction contest scholarships.

“I enjoy writing and had already been thinking about my two writing topics before even knowing about the scholarship contest,” Franklin said. “My creative nonfiction entry was inspired by my experiences as a New Student Orientation Peer Leader, and my other entry allowed me the opportunity to reflect on the events we are experiencing this year and to consider the possibilities of this year becoming one full of hope and positive experiences.”

Franklin’s success reflects the learner-centered focus of education at WT, which provides students with both nurture and rigor, part of WT’s generational plan WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
