Teaching and Related Service

Dr. Nam teaches applied piano, piano literature, and chamber music. She co-directs Music Academy and the Grace Hamilton Piano Festival.

Research and Creative Activity

An active performer, Korean-American pianist Choong-ha Nam has performed extensively in North America as well as Europe and Asia. Recently, she has toured South Korea as part of the faculty-student ensemble, performing works by Copland and Beach in Seoul, Suwon, and Changwon. In the same tour she appeared soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy (Changwon National University). In 2018 she was a featured artist at the International Russian Music Festival (Vancouver, Canada) and The West Vancouver Community Arts Council Concert Series. Other recent far East engagements include teaching and performing in China: she presented master classes and gave teacher training sessions in International Music Arts Association workshops in Foshan and Dalian and adjudicated at the 2019 American Classical Musician’s International Music Competition in Hangzhou. Committed to scholarship, her research findings appeared in various presentations and lecture recitals at the conferences of MTNA, TMTA, TMEA, CMS, Athena Music Festival, and Korean Association of Piano Pedagogy. Her major teachers include Donald Pirone, Robert Shannon, Carol Leone, and Nancy Weems. Her primary influences in pedagogy are Andrew Hisey, Samuel Holland, and Chee-Hwa Tan. She is an advocate of the Suzuki method and have pursued trainings with Gail Lange and other leading Suzuki pedagogues. Dr. Nam is in demand as an adjudicator and have been invited to judge Student Affiliate Contests and June Leondar Chamber Music Contests for Texas Music Teachers Association and Joyce Walker Foundation Award, State Honors Competition, and the State MTNA Competitions for the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico, in addition to various local and regional contests.
