Professional Profile
Dr. Groth is a classical soloist on the operatic and concert stage both in the United States and Europe. His most recent roles include Belcore in L’elisir d’amore and Ping in Turandot with Opera Naples in Naples, Florida and Frank in Die Fledermaus with Cedar Rapids Opera in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Other career highlights include singing Tonio in Pagliacci, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Ford in Falstaff, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, and the title role in Verdi’s Rigoletto.
Dr. Groth is also an accomplished collaborative pianist, having accompanied recitals at various university and opera gala functions. He has served as a music director for several opera and musical theater shows at various universities and high schools across the United States.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Groth joined the WT School of Music in Fall of 2026. He currently teaches Vocal Methods, a course designed to give instrumental music education majors the tools needed to confidently teach in the vocal music classroom. He also is serving as the music director for the One Ounce Operas in his inaugural semester and looks forward to future opportunities to collaborate with opera and musical theater productions in the future.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Groth’s research is focused on the aligning of sound pedagogical principles with repertoire selection that best suit the needs of beginning university students for efficient growth during their study. His article, Rethinking the Italian Twenty-Four Songs and Arias: Exploring Classical Vocal Literature Selection through the Lense of bel canto Technique, was published in the May/June 2025 edition of the Journal of Singing to further bring light to this topic. He has since worked with The Canciones Project to curate a collection of 24 bel canto Italian Songs and Arias complete with pedagogical resources for teachers of beginning students. He is continuing to work towards future collections to suit the needs of intermediate and advanced collegiate singers.
Personal Sketch
Dr. Groth holds a D.M.A. in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado-Boulder, M.M. in Vocal Performance and M.M. in Collaborative Piano from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
