Safety and Security

Campus safety and security is of the highest priority at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU).  WTAMU strives to provide a healthy, safe, and secure environment for all members of the campus community.  The following campus entities provide campus-wide safety and security support and service.

Environmental Health and Safety Program

General Safety Environmental Health and Safety (GS-EHS)

The Environmental Health and Safety program (EHSP) is responsible for general safety, by promoting safe work and health practices, to all faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  Examples of General Health and Safety components include:  office safety, proper lifting techniques, trip and fall prevention.

Academic Research Environmental Health and Safety (AR-EHS)

The Academic and Research Environmental Health and Safety Program (AR-EHS) establishes required and best management practices and training to provide a safe research environment. AREHS facilitates the WTAMU campus research compliance committees, laboratory inspections, laser and radiation safety, chemical procurement and inventory, export controls, financial conflict of interest, occupational health, and over 60 standard operating procedures found at:  www.wtamu.edu/sops

Fire and Life Safety Environmental Health and Safety (FLS-EHS)

The Fire and Life Safety Environmental Health Safety Program (FLS-EHS) provides advisory and technical support and training to the University community related to fire and life safety, including:  managing safety risk, assessing and evaluating the environment, promoting safe work practices, providing educational training programs, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.

Risk Management (RM)

The Risk Management Office (RM) at West Texas A&M University seeks to minimize the adverse effects of unpredictable events by identifying, evaluating, and controlling loss exposures faced by the University to preserve human, physical, and financial assets.

Risk Management supports the following university functions:

  • Risk Assessment is intended for the practicality of adopting programs of self-insurance, or self assumption, in whole or in part, consistent with the probable frequency, severity and impact of losses on the financial stability of the A&M System and/or WTAMU.
  • Hazard Matrix is a tool to help develop a process for identifying and discussing potential risk issues.
  • Worker’s Compensation Insurance - 1 st report of Injury Witness Report Camps - Each camp is required to maintain general liability and accident medical insurance coverage through The Texas A&M University System which is handled through RM.
  • Insurance procurement availability of insurance coverage for university vehicles and equipment subject to the practicality of adopting programs of self-insurance, or self assumption, in whole or in part, consistent with the probable frequency, severity and impact of losses on the financial stability of the A&M System and/or WTAMU.
