University’s AMA Chapter to Host Seminar on Super Bowl Sports Marketing

 

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) will sponsor a special marketing/international management seminar titled, "The Super Bowl Phenomenon: Marketing Lessons and Strategies" from 12:20-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Classroom Center, Room 335 on campus.

Guest speakers for this timely program are Clint Brakebill, sports director at Amarillo’s KAMR and Fox 14 News; Michael McBroom, director of intercollegiate athletics at WTAMU; and Randall Whalin, chief marketing officer at the Fairly Group, Amarillo.

The three speakers will discuss the annual Super Bowl and its impact on sports marketing as well as the U.S. society as a whole. The 2019 Super Bowl will be played Feb. 3 in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga., with the New England Patriots (five-time Super Bowl champions) and the Los Angeles Rams (one-time winner) vying for the win.

From marketing and business perspectives, television viewership of the 2018 Super Bowl in the United States stood at 103.4 million viewers. For the 2019 game, a 30-second TV Super Bowl ad will cost $5 million and has attracted well-known companies, organizations and global brands. According to AdAge and other business publications, the cost of a 30-second commercial in the Super Bowl I in 1967 averaged $40,000. Interestingly, $5.4 billion were spent on Super Bowl TV ads in the last 52 years. The 2019 Super Bowl commercials, as in previous years, will represent a diverse array of global industries such as autos, beverages, food, financial/insurance, entertainment, consumer goods, IT, telecom and more. According to Forbes magazine, in 2018, among the NFL teams, the Dallas Cowboys finished first with a market value of $5 billion."

According to Dr. Syed Tariq Anwar, professor of marketing and international business, "in the U.S. and beyond, the annual Super Bowl Championship Game has become a major social and cultural event, attracting millions of viewers and enthusiasts. Also included are TV and radio stations, consumer-related purchases, social and print media and miscellaneous events. Overall, it is a win-win marketing bonanza, a high-profile carnival and a cultural event which will be repeated every year."

The 2019 Super Bowl seminar is another timely program planned and sponsored by WTAMU’s Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA). Since 2017, the chapter has won major awards and recognition from the national AMA and WTAMU regarding its 'exemplary performance in planning and internal/external communications.’ The chapter also was rated by WTAMU as an 'outstanding organization finalist.’ The AMA chapter was established in 2014 and has organized multiple seminars and special events for students, faculty, staff and the business community
