University’s AMA Chapter to Host Marketing Seminar on NAFTA


CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) will sponsor a special seminar titled, "Revisiting NAFTA and Globalization" from 12:20-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6 in the Classroom Center, Room 335 on campus.

Panel members and speakers for the seminar are Dr. Steve Amosson, professor, economist and Regents Fellow with the Texas A&M Agrilife Research and Extension Center, Amarillo; Gary Molberg, president and CEO, Amarillo Chamber of Commerce; and Dr. James K. Owens, Hodges Professor of corporate Governance and professor of finance, WTAMU.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed in 1994 between the United States, Canada and Mexico. From its inception, the NAFTA Treaty aimed at eliminating trade and investment barriers between the three countries in North America. Major areas of NAFTA included transportation, agriculture, auto industry, etc. According to the International Trade Administration (ITA) of the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., trade between the three countries reached $1trillion in 2007. Of course, the United State’s trade deficit with NAFTA countries stood at $116 billion. Equally important is the role of globalization which helped to create global markets based on heightened consumption and spending worldwide. According to the Council on Foreign Relations (New York), the NAFTA Treaty was based on harmonizing rules and integration in the region. 

According to Dr. Syed Tariq Anwar, professor of marketing and international business, "within today’s fast changing global competition, high-tech industries, and service sectors, the seminar speakers will revisit and address a multitude of issues of the NAFTA Treaty and its impact on the Panhandle of Texas. Regarding today’s geopolitical environment and geoeconomic forces, the topics of NAFTA and globalization demand discussions because of changing business models, competition and region-specific integration."

This is another informative session sponsored by WTAMU’s AMA. The AMA chapter was started in 2014 and has organized many special lectures and seminars. The special seminar is free and open to WTAMU students, faculty and staff members as well as the community.
