CANYON, Texas — The West Texas A&M University Concert and Symphonic Bands will close out the fall semester with an evening celebrating the band tradition.
The Concert Band will perform at 6 p.m. and the Symphonic Band at 8 p.m. Dec. 3 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus.
Admission is free. The concert also may be viewed on the WT School of Music’s Vimeo page.
“We are excited to share an evening of music that spans more than a century of creativity, storytelling and sound,” said Dr. Russ Teweleit, professor of music education and Concert Band director. “Our program celebrates both the power and the beauty of the band tradition, and we hope audiences enjoy experiencing it as much as we’ve enjoyed preparing it.”
It’s an exciting night, echoed Don Lefevre, associate professor of music, director of bands, and Symphonic Band director.
“This program will celebrate music from a wide range of composers who are contributing exceptional music to the band repertoire,” Lefevre said.
The Concert Band will perform “Glory of the Yankee Navy” by John Phillip Sousa, “Shimmering Sunshine” by Kevin Day, “Elegy for a Young American” by Ronald Lo Presi, “Cajón’s Reverb” by Dennis Llinás and “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Randol Alan Bass, narrated by Dr. Ryan Boehme, assistant professor of percussion.
The Symphonic Band will perform “The Royal Welch Fusilers” by Sousa, “Fantastic Dreams” by Frank Ticheli, “Adagio para Orquesta de Instrumentos de Viento” by Joaquin Rodrigo, “Un Cafecito” by Llinás and “Flying Jewels” by James M. David.
Fostering an appreciation of the arts is a key component of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign has raised more than $175 million and will continue through 2025.
