CANYON, Texas — An upcoming West Texas A&M University recital will shine a spotlight on overshadowed composers.

Dr. Sarah Beckham-Turner, director of WT Opera and assistant professor of voice in WT’s School of Music, will team with guest artist Ron Land, piano, for a recital of works by female composers.

The concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT’s Canyon campus. Admission is free. Call 806-651-2840.

Land, an adjunct professor of voice at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, has worked with Beckham-Turner since she was a young artist at Opera New Jersey in 2011.

“Ron suggested a recital featuring all female composers because there is a wealth of stunning repertoire by women that is rarely performed,” Beckham-Turner said.

Works on the program include “Si j’etais un gardinier,” “Les Reves,” “Trahison” and “Villanelles” by Cecile Chaminade; “Elle était descendue au bas de la prairie,” “Elle est gravement gaie,” “Parfois, je suis triste” and “Un poète distait” by Lily Boulanger; “Hai Luli!” and “Havanaise” by Pauline Viardot; “Lorelai” and “Mein Stern” by Clara Schumann; “Waldseligkeit” and “Erntelied” by Alma Mahler; “The Years at the Spring” by Amy Beach; “Love Let the Wind Cry” by Undine Moore; “Dear Edna” by Lori Laitman; and “Casual” by Georgia Stitt.

Fostering an appreciation of the arts is a key component of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign has raised more than $175 million and will continue through 2025.
