CANYON, Texas—A West Texas A&M University Department of Communication student from Perryton earned the first Randy and Anita Ray DIG IN Scholarship.
Isaiah Tanner, a sophomore digital communication major, participates across campus as a member of the National Broadcasting Society, KWTS-FM 91.1, Thunder Vision and as a lab assistant. This much digging in helped earn Tanner the first official DIG IN Scholarship of $500 for fall 2020.
“It means a great deal to me,” Tanner said. “It shows me that I’m doing what I need to do, and it inspires me to keep working hard and to get good grades.”
Randy Ray, who has served as the director of broadcasting in the Department of Communication since 2002, has been pushing students to “dig in” long before he and his wife established the award.
“Anita and I are really excited about being able to award this scholarship for the first time,” Ray said. “It has been a dream of ours for a long time to give this scholarship out to deserving students, and Isaiah is just that—very deserving. He digs in both in and out of the classroom. His work ethic and great attitude are why we wanted him to be the first recipient.”
The creation of this scholarship by a faculty member to encourage student involvement and deeper learning demonstrates WT’s commitment toward being a learner-centered university, which is reflected in WT’s generational plan WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
