CANYON, Texas—Yes, air horns are allowed. Encouraged, even.

Exuberant expressions of joy are a given at graduation ceremonies, though air horns are usually forbidden. To keep that jubilant feeling alive in the upcoming virtual commencement ceremony for West Texas A&M University’s May 2020 graduates, community members, family and friends are encouraged to submit congratulatory videos.

“We can’t celebrate the Class of 2020 in person, but we can still salute their achievements,” said Dr. Neil Terry, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “These congratulatory videos will be a crucial part of our virtual ceremony, and we hope everyone will join in the salute to these students, who are excelling in remarkably difficult circumstances.”

As announced April 22, WT’s May 2020 commencement has moved online to wtamu.edu/commencement in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need for social distancing and avoidance of large groups.

The exercises will be available for viewing between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. May 9, recognizing about 1,600 undergraduates and graduate students.

Throughout the day, WT will encourage viewers to share congratulatory videos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Participants are asked to record a short video and post it on their favorite social media channels, tagging WTAMU (@wtamu) and using the hashtag #WTClassOf2020.

Graduating students have been asked to submit their own videos thanking loved ones, faculty and staff. Links to those videos will be attached to the students’ names in their respective colleges on the virtual commencement site.
