University’s Career Services Receives Top 20 Ranking
Nov. 28, 2016
CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University has been recognized by OnlineCollegePlan.com in its "Top 20 Colleges with the Best Career Services," placing WTAMU at No. 17 for the many opportunities offered through its Career Services that help students find success after graduation.
The website offers students a resource that considers not only colleges and universities that offer an excellent education, but also those that are very supportive in helping find the best jobs opportunities available. The ranking is created based on data from U.S. News and World Report’s best online bachelor’s programs cross referenced with early career salary data to measure the effectiveness of career services offered at colleges and universities across the country.
For Denese Skinner, director of WTAMU’s Career Services, this recognition is an affirmation that what their team is doing is working. WTAMU knows what more than 98 percent of its recent graduates are doing after they get their degrees with almost 83 percent of them accomplishing their desired first-destination goals. Starting salaries for WTAMU graduates are well above the national average, too.
"Our Career Services’ team works very hard to serve all students with the highest caliber of service possible," she said.
Skinner said their goal is to offer online as many job search resources as possible, so the students can access assistance based on their own schedule. Career Services also offers in-person support.
"Access to resources virtually, yet having a strong in-person presence is vital,"Skinner said.
From creating a resume to getting prepared for a job interview, WTAMU’s Career Services offers the students a full range of support in their job search. Skill development workshops are offered 24-7 for online students to help them with resume creation, interviewing skills and job search strategies. Another online service that is offered is Handshake, where the students can find many available jobs including local, state, national and even international.
With everything from job fairs to internships and résumé-building workshops, WTAMU and Career Services are committed to the task of making the experience of finding a job as easy as possible for the students.
