CANYON, Texas—The Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team at West Texas A&M University won a Regional Championship in competition at Rogers, Arkansas, on March 11. This marks the team’s 17th consecutive win.

The team will advance to SIFE USA National Competition in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 10-12.

SIFE is an international collegiate organization that uses the positive power of business to improve the lives of others. The WTAMU SIFE team creates multiple community-based service-learning projects which focus on people in need. According to Laura Beth Hallman, SIFE CEO, the signature project for 2010-2011 is called "Awaken the Dream" and assists refugees newly settled in Amarillo. SIFE partners with Refugee Services of Texas on the project.

Because Campbell’s Soup is a national sponsor of SIFE, the WTAMU team participates in the Campbell’s "Let’s Can Hunger Challenge." To date, they have served more than 8,500 meals at Kids Café, worked 153 hours in the High Plains Food Bank garden, taught nutrition lessons at the Maverick Club and conducted multiple food drives for High Plains Food Bank.

At regional competition, the team uses a multimedia presentation to showcase their 15 projects for judges from the corporations which are SIFE sponsors. Speakers on the WTAMU presentation team are Laura Beth Hallman, Albert Plexico, Karina Linardy, Juan Gallardo, Cydney Friemel and Adrian Walker. The media presentation was created by Edgar and Ivan Cardenas.
