Undergraduate Advising Information

The Undergraduate Business Office is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Advising by appointment is available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Students with fewer than 30 hours and new transfer students need to contact Advising Services for an appointment.

Academic advising is a process that helps students map out a plan for academic success and ensure their goals are met. During advising, the student becomes eligible to register using West Texas A&M University’s online registration system, Buff Advisor, through a process called "greenlighting." 

“Greenlighting”, is a term used at WTAMU to grant a student permission to register for the designated courses that the student and the academic adviser have discussed. This process must be completed every semester to be eligible for the current registration period.

The advising model within our college is very similar to a relay on the track, as each new portion gets you a little closer to the finish line. 

• All new students (transfer and freshmen) must first be advised by Advising Services. 
• After the first semester or once a students reaches 30 or more hours, the students is then advised by an advisor in the Undergraduate Business Programs Office. 
• At that time, the adviser will not only advise and provide the "greenlight" for registration but will also assign the student to their Faculty Adviser. 
• Students will stay with their Faculty Adviser until graduation.

Each student is asked to prepare a proposed class schedule in Student Planning, prior to their appointment with their academic adviser. We encourage our students to use three tools to be able to determine what courses that they need to take, located below. 

1. Program Evaluation – This can be found in Buff Advisor, right above the Student Planning link.
   • This is updated in ‘real time’ and shows students which courses that they still need to take. 
   • It is laid out in the same way that the Degree Checklist is, however students will not take courses in the order shown on the Program Evaluation / Degree Checklist.
   • We want you to take courses based on the Curriculum Guide (see below).
2. Checklist & Curriculum Guide – We would like you to use the 2^nd page, Curriculum Guide, to know when to take certain courses.
3. Student Planning
   1. 1. Once in your Buff Connect portal, click on ‘Buff Advisor’
      2. Click on ‘Student Planning’
      3. Click on ‘Plan & Schedule’
      4. Notice if there are any alerts or holds in the upper right corner that can prevent you from registering. These will need to be taken care of before you can register.
      5. In the search bar, type in the course that you would like to take. (Ex: ACCT2301)
      6. We encourage you to utilize four ‘Filter Result’ options for every search. This will optimize your search especially when looking at electives (Ex: Adv. ECON Elective)
         1. Subject (select the discipline)
         2. Locations (select either on campus, web-based, or both)

         4. Academic Level (select ‘Undergraduate’)
      7. Find the course you want to take and click on ‘View Available Sections’
      8. Find the section that you want to take and click on ‘Add Section to Schedule’ i. If you are not sure what sections works best click on ‘Add Course to Plan’ as a place holder and plan sections later in your ‘Schedule’ view.

Once you have located the three items above,

1. Log into Student Planning and enter a proposed schedule with courses and sections included. Instructions for Student Planning. 
2. Once your schedule is entered, please contact your academic adviser to schedule a greenlighting appointment.
3. After reviewing your schedule, you will then be greenlighted
4. Register for classes on your classification date.

For some courses, you must have a certain level of knowledge in a specific area before you can take that course. As a result, you may have to complete pre-requisite courses prior to taking some of our classes in the College of Business.

All students earning a B.B.A. degree will be required to take our capstone course, MGT 4315 - Strategic Management and Policy. This course requires students to have senior standing and to have completed MGT 3330, MKT 3340, and FIN 3320 before they will be allowed to register for the course. 

Some of the pre-requisites for MGT 4315 have pre-requisites of their own so it is important for students to be aware of the pre-requisite progression when planning their schedule each semester. 

Ideally, students should plan to take MGT 4315 during their last semester at WTAMU. 

Students are encouraged to apply for graduation after they have registered for courses for their final semester. Doing so will allow for a timely graduation audit prior to the beginning of their final semester.
