CM-11 User Installed Software

Statement

West Texas A&M University users must use software and associated documentation in accordance with contract agreements and copyright laws. WTAMU must tracks the use of software and associated licenses to control copying and distribution.

Applicability

This control applies to all West Texas A&M network information resources. The intended audience for this control includes all information resource owners, custodians, and users of information resources.

Implementation

  • Any user wishing to install any software should follow implementation of control CM-10 Software Usage Restrictions.
  • All software licensed for more than one campus department shall be maintained and installed by IT personnel only.
  • Periodic scans of campus systems will be performed to review software installations.
  • Users man not install applications which capture indiscriminate input from a human interface device such as a keyboard.
  • Applications designed to caputre discriminate input are not in scope of this control if the application meets the following criteria:
    • The application behavior is explicitly approved by the user on a per-application basis;
    • The application does not run as the operating system level, and
    • The application does not capture indiscriminate input from a web browser.
