The Corner of Creativity and Analytical Thinking

Marketing is a rare breed in the College of Business, because it combines both creative and analytic skills. It is where qualitative and quantitative skills intersect. It is the visible side of most businesses, thanks to the advertisements and social media posts that marketers launch. But it is also data-driven, where statistics, trends, and demographics influence corporate decisions.

And if you are the rare person who can balance all of these traits and flip the switch from one to the next, marketing is the perfect place for you to call home.

While marketing is ultimately responsible for driving demand toward an enterprise’s products or services, it encompasses a wide variety of tasks. These range from identifying and selecting target markets, new product development, customer relationship management, distribution, and international markets. Blend in social media, advertising, e-commerce, personal selling, and communication, and you have a complex field that demands diverse people and numerical skills. This is no small feat.

But in the end it is all about convincing people to spend their money on your product or service, and doing so in a way that leaves them feeling good that they did so. The successful marketing major rises to that occasion.
