Student Social Work Association (SSWA)
The SSWA is an organization for social science majors. The club provides students with the opportunity to connect, network, volunteer, and serve as a community. The SSWA helps students become actively involved in the community, thus preparing them for their future careers.
The SSWA mottos are:
- Social work is the art of listening and the science of hope.
- Promote social justice through awareness and community service.
- Develop students as professional social workers.
National Association of Social Work (NASW) Texas - Panhandle Branch
Joining NASW while you are a student or new professional helps you build a strong and satisfying social work career. Students and new professionals who join NASW gain real-world knowledge of the profession and the communities social workers serve that goes beyond a textbook and degree.
Through membership, students and new professionals can learn and experience social work at the national, state, and local levels — NASW membership includes both national and chapter memberships.
Students who join NASW before graduation save up to 75% on regular membership dues.
Students who maintain continuous NASW membership after graduation continue to receive discounted rates the first 2-3 years after graduation.
WTAMU students who join NASW are eligible for a scholarship every year, and can purchase cords for graduation.
Phi Alpha Nu
The purpose of Phi Alpha Honor Society is to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideas. Phi Alpha is dedicated to honoring diversity, equality, inclusivity, justice and fostering a community where individuals from all walks of life can flourish. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.
To qualify as a member, you must meet the following requirements below:
- A junior or senior social work major
- Completed at least 9 credit hours of social work courses, or completed at least 6 hours and currently in at least 3 hours
- Have a social work GPA of at least 3.25
- Have an overall GPA of 3.00
Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
