Business Office Cost of Attendance

Cost of Attendance

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Financing a college education can be a challenge for many families, but officials at West Texas A&M University have two options for undergraduate students beginning Fall 2018.

WTAMU has implemented a guaranteed cost of attendance plan, and a one year cost of attendance plan to choose from. Our guaranteed plan locks in some tuition and fees rate for four years, (48 consecutive months). And knowing that most of the tuition and mandatory fees are locked-in offers students and parents an amazing tool in planning for college. Families can plan with four years of tuition and mandatory fees with confidence. Plus, the guaranteed plan is an incentive for students to graduate on time to save money.

Please be advised: The following items are not part of the guaranteed cost of attendance:

  • Statutory Tuition- Set by the Texas Legislature. This rate has not changed for more than ten years, but a new rate could be set by Texas Legislature each year.
  • Education Accreditation Fee- Applicable for all declared education preparatory majors.
  • Social Work Accreditation Fee- Applicable for all declared social work majors.
  • Music and Voice Program Enhancement Fees- Applicable for all declared music majors, and students enrolled in 2+ hours of vocal instruction
  • Undergraduate Academic Enhancement Fee- Applicable for all undergraduate students who are not declared in degree programs with additional differential tuition, or accreditation or enhancement fees.
  • On Campus Housing and Meal Plans- Applicable for all undergraduate students enrolled full time, (12 or more hours) who are under 21 years of age and who have completed fewer than 60 post high school credit hours* are required to live in University housing and have a University meal plan. Rates and exemptions can be found on the Office of Residential Living web page.

Please see Tuition and Fees for detailed information on each mandatory tuition and fee charge that appears within this cost of attendance webpage.

Locked-in rates for the 2018-2019 academic year are based on a 5% inflation rate—one of the lowest in the state compared to other universities—and will be guaranteed for a specified number of concurrent months based on the student's classification status.

The second option for undergraduate students is for a one year, 12 consecutive month rate, which is calculated by current inflation for each year over the previous academic rate. The 2018-2019 one year rate is based on a 3.7% inflation rate over Fall 2017. Each one year rate will expire after 12 consecutive months have passed, even if the student is not enrolled for semesters offered during those consecutive months.

Please be advised: West Texas A&M University faculty and staff are not permitted to advise students or parents on which option to choose in order to enroll for the student's first semester with West Texas A&M University. Students and parents must make their decision using all information provided on this web page. In addition, West Texas A&M University cannot give an exact program cost because some rates are subject to change each fiscal year and changes for future years cannot be projected in the current year.

New undergraduate students will receive a letter from the Office of Admissions giving them information on activating their student account. The first time the student logs in, they will have to choose guaranteed tuition or to opt out of guaranteed tuition. The student must make their choice before their student account will be activated. Once the choice is locked in, the student cannot change their tuition and fee billing choice at any time while they are enrolled at West Texas A&M University.

Please see Tuition and Fees for detailed information on each mandatory tuition and fee charge that appears within this cost of attendance webpage.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

As of Fall 2017, graduate students are given a one year, 12 consecutive month, rate. This rate changes after 12 consecutive months, whether or not the student is enrolled in courses for each semester offered during the 12 consecutive months.

Please see Tuition and Fees for detailed information on each mandatory tuition and fee charge that appears within this cost of attendance webpage.

RESIDENCY STATUS

Residency is determined by the Admissions Office based on information provided by students applying for admission. Students must complete the CORE Residency Form which will determine their official residency status.

Categories of residency are:

  • Texas Resident/Border County
  • Non Resident, Out of State
  • Non Resident, International

TEXAS RESIDENTS
Students coded as Texas residents have met the residency requirements for determination through the CORE Residency Form with the Office of Admissions.

Please note, Texas resident students that exceed their degree requirements by 30 hours if enrolled for the past 10 years, or 45 hours if enrolled in or after 2006 are subject to 30/45 hour rule, which results in the student being billed at the statutory rate for international students, (current rate is $465 per hour), rather than $50 per semester credit hour as given in the rate tables below. For more information, please see the Office of the Registrar Policies web page.

Texas Education Code 56.014 requires that a portion of a Texas Resident student’s designated and differential tuition is set aside to provide financial assistance for students enrolled with the University as scholarship funds. Texas residents are notified by Buff email of the specific amount set aside each semester they are enrolled.

ELIGIBLE BORDER COUNTIES

Students coded as Border County residents have met the residency requirements for determination through the CORE Residency Form with the Office of Admissions. Border County students are eligible to pay statutory rate of $50 per semester credit hour, (in addition to all other mandatory tuition and fees listed on the Tuition and Fees webpage), and designated tuition based on their classification at the same rate as Texas Residents.

Border Counties eligible for the Border County tuition rate are as follows:

Oklahoma:

• Beaver • Cimarron • Jackson • McCurtain
• Beckham • Cotton • Jefferson • Roger Mills
• Bryan • Ellis • Love • Texas
• Choctaw • Harmon • Marshall • Tillman

New Mexico:

• Curry • Otero
• Dona Ana • Quay
• Eddy • Roosevelt
• Lea • Union

NON-RESIDENT, OUT OF STATE STUDENTS

Non-Resident, Out of State students are student who have met residency requirements for determination through the CORE Residency Form with the Office of Admissions their first semester, (students and students from families who have established and maintained domicile in any US state outside of Texas). Students residing in US Territories or US citizens living abroad are not eligible to be coded as Non-Resident, Out of State students, and will be coded as Non-Resident, International students.

The Tech.54.0601 waiver is automatically applied to eligible Non-Resident, Out of State students This waiver waves statutory tuition from $465.00 per semester credit hour, to $80.00 per semester credit hour for Fall 2018-Summer 2 2019, (in addition to all other mandatory tuition and fees listed on the Cost of Attendance tables further down this page, and listed on the Tuition and Fees webpage).

Please note: Non-Resident, Out of State students that exceed their degree requirements by 30 hours if enrolled for the past 10 years, or 45 hours if enrolled in or after 2006 are subject to 30/45 hour rule, which is a loss of the Tech.54.0601 waiver. In addition, undergraduate students that fall below a 2.0 cumulative average, and graduate students that fall below a 3.0 cumulative average will also be subject to the loss of the Tech.54.0601. Loss of this waiver results in statutory tuition being billed at the rates given in the tables below in white, (rather than the calculation of the cost with the waiver applied in blue).

For more information, please see the Office of the Registrar Policies webpage.

NON-RESIDENT, INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

All students who are not residents of the United States of America, and students residing US Territories, as well as US citizens living abroad are billed at the Non-Resident, International student rates. International students from countries with a tax treaty with the US may file a W-8 BEN for tax treaty benefits through the Accounting and Business Office with the help of the International Student Office.
