Welcome to the 72nd annual music camp at West Texas A&M University. We've always been a band camp, and we're in our third consecutive year of orchestra (although we had orchestra in the late 1970s and early 1980s). It's 72 years and we are Band & Orchestra Camp.
Here are some "before" pictures. Chloe and Brody assembling nametags.
...as is Caitlin.
The nametag will have the camper's identification, the Buffalo Gold card that will get them into buildings for rehearsals--if the camper is staying on campus (= "resident") then the card is also their meal ticket to the cafeteria. The nametag will also have a camp patch and sticker in a secret pouch.
[Campers who come to camp from home each day (= "commuter") will have a red line at the bottom of their ID. They do NOT have "meal" credit, but they can buy a meal that will be deducted from whatever balance is on the card.]
The crew has also assembled the registration packet, which will be given to the camper at check-in.
I've escaped from the camp office, which is on the second floor of Mary Moody Northen Hall, east side. Northen will be designated "N" on the camper's packet if there's a room he/she will attend during the day. "100s" are on the ground floor; "200s" are on the second floor. Northen is triangular-shaped, so we often walk in circles.
To my left (looking north) is the hallway for the art department; to my right (south) will be the music side.
To my right (south) is the poster for the band camp competition. At the end of camp (on Friday) the winning junior high band/orchestra and the winning high school band/orchestra will have a pizza party.
Looking to the northwest from the balcony. "Romeo, where are you?" is what Juliet would have said back in the day. Off in the distance is the entrance to Northen Recital Hall, where the registration process will begin.
Moving further east is a view of the music side of Northen.
There are three banks of practice rooms where campers can warm up before their audition (but there will be other locations available as well). [You'll notice that I often talk in parenthetical phrases. I just love the shift-9 and shift-0 on my keyboard.]
Because music shares the building with the art department, there are many pieces on display. Here is one of the installations. [You will become accustomed to bad picture talking (not photography, as picture taking is a lower form of expertise. Just accept is for what it is.]
Wrapped chicken wire sculptures. [Not only is it bad pictures, I also don't know what I'm talking about.]
Paintings.
The painting studio.
I've turned to the right (facing east) and you can see in the distance that we are approaching the camp office.
The drawing studio.
Becky, the camp secretary.
I'm on the loose again, going downstairs. I don't know how long these butterflies have been frozen in time, but the sun is beginning to bleach the color out of them. [I should talk.]
The source of their escape.
Looing toward the northwest. Again, the recital hall, where campers will begin registration, is at the end of the passageway.
A lot more art work. [You enjoy, while I rest.]
I've caught up to you. Remember 10 pictures ago? We're up to the recital hall.
Going outside.
Looking to the northwest.
Turning to my left, looking east. You can see the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex, the "F" building during camp.
Turning right. Each of the buildings on campus has a monument naming the building you are examing.
Turning righer! This is the west addition to MMNH (Mary Moody Northen Hall). The percussion studio (N-1002, N-1003, N-1004) is closest to us, then there is a large ensemble rehearsal room (N-1010), uniform storage, instrument storage, and two smaller rehearsal spaces (N-1022, N-1023).
Re-eentering Northen.
The recital hall.
I overshot Northen and emptied out on the east side. In front of me is the Classroom Center. It's a four-story building. We will enter it to get into the Jack B. Kelley space for Legacy Hall and several of the spaces in the basement that we are using this year. [The cafeteria is undergoing renovations (as is Jones Hall, Cross Hall, and Shirley Hall) so it has taken over the Alumni Banquet Hall to serve meals. We hope to move back into spaces next year.]
Turning back to Northen.
Facing north. This is the south entrance to the Fine Arts Complex, the "F" building.
Facing east. This sidewalk will take you to the residence halls (Founders for the boys and Centennial for the girls.) It will also take you (it doesn't really move, so maybe "lead" would be a better verb) to the Activity Center for recreational events, such as swimming, bowling, basketball, racquetball, intramural games to earn points for your band/orchestra.
Going into the Classroom Center.
Inside and turning left (east).
Walking forward. On the corner is the Buffalo Gold Card office. If you want to put money on the band camp card, this is the place to do it. They will be open on Sunday during registration, and then they will have normal 8 am to 5 pm hours during the week. Be sure to fill out a reimbursement form for a refund if there is a balance of $10 or greater remaining on the card at the end of camp.
Turning right. At the end of the hall is the food court. There is a sub sandwich shop open this summer and Starbucks. [FYI: Chick-fil-A is being renovated this summer.]
Turning right an entering the Student Success Center. You'll pass by here to get to Legacy Hall and the JBK basement rehearsal rooms. Angle left (or ask someone where to go.)
The Legends Club for bingo and karaoke nights.
The stairs down to the basement. Legacy Hall is on the other side of this wall. It's a huge space and it has multiple entrances. It, too, is triangular-shaped.
The right side of Legacy. Here are the restrooms. An entrance to Legacy is where that clock is.
I've gone downstairs into the hallway for JBK West Texas, JBK Thunder, JBK Maroon, JBK White, and behind me is JBK Senate. On the right are more restrooms and drinking fountains.
I'm back on the ground floor facing east. This passageway will take you into the food court. [Go back several pictures in case you don't remember what the food court is. Then try to catch up to us we continue the tour.]
I ran really fast toward the south end of the Fine Arts Complex. Going in.
If you go straight ahead (north), this is what you will find. The School of Music is on the second floot.
If you turn right at the first hallway, this is where you will find these rooms. By the way, the Branding Iron Theatre is where the Saturday concerts will be performed. It's on the east side of the building. You can go this way, but the parking lot is on the northwest side of the FAC, so you might want to enter from the north side of the building (rather than coming into the building) to reach the BIT.
Looking down that firts hallway to the right. See the light at the end of the hall. Go through that door, turn left, and you'll be able to get to the BIT.
Turning left, heading north. At the middle of the hallway, turn left (facing west) to exit.
Outside looking back at the "F" building.
Between the "F" and "N" buildings is a pathway back (south) to the Classroom Center.
Big break in time. The office workers went to the residence halls to test coding on band camp cards ahead of camp to make sure everything was working. We're on the east side of campus. We're about ready to cross the street (it's closed off; no through traffic] headed to Centennial Hall where the girls will stay.
Founders Hall where the boys will stay.
Caitlin walking.
Facing north, coming up on the Activity Center.
Across the street (major highway = two-lane roadway) is the on-campus football stadium.
To the west of the stadium is Jarrett Hall. We will have overflow boys, the Band Director's Workshop, camp faculty.
The major highway, looking west, heading back to "F" and "N."
But first, left face (looking to the south). The Dining Hall. It's under rennovation this summer, so walk forward.....
.....to the Alumni Banquet Hall (spelled "F-A-C-I-L-I-T-Y") and that's the dining hall this summer. The ABH is actually attached to the Dining Hall, so it's not hard to find.
Heading west again. A picture of the clock tower that's on the east side of the Classroom Center.
And we're back. Classroom Center on the left; Northen east entrance on the right.
Pause. More to come.
