Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society Welcomes New Members
Omicron Delta Epsilon invite qualified candidates to apply to join this prestigious economics honors society. ODE is open to students of any major as long as the qualifications are met.
Three benefits of joining ODE are:
Marketing Contest Winners Selected
The Fall 2009 Principles of Advertising course with Dr. De'Arno De'Armond were charged with creating a short video focused on marketing the College of Business. Each respective video was shown before a panel of judges and received a score based on six different criteria (length, visual appeal, attention, interest, desire, and action). The overall winner received a $100 Hastings gift card per team member and honorable mention winners received a $25 Hastings gift card per member, sponsored by the WTAMU College of Business. The Fall 2009 winners are as follows:
FDIC Internship Opportunities Available
The FDIC is recruiting again this spring for SCEP Interns. This internship offers great experience in bank auditing. We have had a lot of success with students in the past. This semester, Amanda Davis (finance major) and Cindy Moreno (general business major) are participating. Amanda is in the Lubbock office and Cindy is in Oklahoma City.
Key dates for the spring FDIC internship opportunities are:
Reporting to the Board
Each month the students learn about a different section of the board report and how this information is used by the board to make decisions. Additionally, each student individually works on a special project that will be presented to the Board in April. The students' participation is part of the College of Business' emphasis on ethical leadership and corporate governance.
Interested students for the 2010-11 Student Board should contact Dr. Anne Macy for more information.
SIFE Focuses on International Projects
Christmas Break increases SIFE's focus on international projects as team members return home between semesters. For the third year, SIFE helped build bottle houses in Warnes, Bolivia. Recycling plastic or glass bottles into construction materials is a unique approach to providing low-cost housing to impoverished families.
The SIFE team also funded food purchases for an orphanage in Bolivia; families in Quito, Ecuador; and a charity in Jakarta, Indonesia. The food drives internationally complement the work SIFE has done locally with the High Plains Food Bank food drives, the Kids Cafe, and the community food garden.
Vancouver Trip Taking Shape
A Study Abroad Trip sponsored by the College of Business is slated to go to British Columbia this summer (May 20-June 1, 2010). Student costs for the trip are expected to be approximately $1,750. This amount will include transportation, hotel accommodations, admission fees and at least one meal each day plus miscellaneous items.
If you qualify for the Study Abroad Scholarship, the scholarship funds should cover your tuition and fees, textbook and there is a possibility it could also cover some additional meals. Hence, the final cost for the trip, all inclusive, should be approximately $1,750.
The course you would register for is MGT 5/4333 Diversity and Cross-Cultural Management. The course will count as a management elective or can substitute for the upper-level economics requirements for the BBA or the international requirement for the MBA. In addition, if you already earned credit for MGT 5333/4333, then let me know and we will seek independent study course credit or find an alternative course. The textbook we are considering using for the course is written by a faculty member at Simon Fraser University (they have the number one College of Business in Canada, it is located in Vancouver, BC and we may visit there at least briefly). Given the diversity of the Vancouver, Vancouver Island and Whistler areas, I can't think of a better place for someone to write about cross-cultural management. In addition to covering material from the textbook, we will work with eight or so cases related to diversity and cross-cultural management.
The 2010 Winter Olympics are being held in the Vancouver/Whistler, British Columbia area and began on February 12th. There should be some amazing views of areas we will be visiting (in addition to the Olympic events themselves).
If you would like to guarantee a spot for yourself on this Study Abroad Trip, you will need to see me (CC 214E) and then make a deposit of $150 to the WT Business Office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 19th (or before). We will begin advertising for this trip within the next couple of weeks and will schedule our first informational meeting before the end of February. A second deposit of $1,000 will be due at the WT Business Office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12th. The third and final deposit of $600 will be due at the WT Business Office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17th.
Anyone with questions should contact Dr. LaVelle Mills via email or at 806.651.3866.
