Course Goals: This course will present and explain the inner and outer histories of the English language. Inner history comprises the actual phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic changes concomitant with the evolution of English; outer history comprises the cultural and technological events contributing to inner history. We will begin by learning and applying basic linguistic terminology. Once this vocabulary is in place, we will use it to examine the history of the English language.
