The Virgil Henson Activities Center offers two community programs, Camp Tatanka and Buff Swim Academy as well as membership to the activities center for community members.
Camp Tatanka (an all day summer camp only): Available Summer 2024
West Texas A&M University and The City of Canyon offer children an exciting summer program. The summer recreation program has evolved into a day camp for children who are between the ages of 7 to 12 years old. Camp Tatanka’s camp schedule provides parents with a carefully planned and supervised program Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Activities
Campers should plan to stay until activities are completed to maximize activity coordination and supervision. Parents can enroll their children in any or all of the 6 week long sessions through June and July. Possible activities include rock climbing, bowling, crafts, sport skills, swimming and weekly museum and library visits.
The majority of scheduled activities are in the Virgil Henson Activities Center on the campus of West Texas A&M University. There are plans for other exciting activities in the future. Parents will be notified in advance for any field trips or activities away from the Activities Center. Please, consult your weekly activities schedule for all planned activities.

Space is limited so to reserve your child's place you will need to pay in advance the full tuition for camp.

Scheduled activities begin at 8 a.m. Price includes all activities and lunch. We will need a 24 hour advanced notice in writing if your child will not be able to attend camp for the day or will need to be picked up early from camp.
Buff Swim Academy - Available Summer 2024
West Texas A&M University is excited to begin another year of our learn to swim program at Buff Swim Academy! All 30-minute lessons will be in the Virgil Henson Activities Center pool on the campus of West Texas A&M University, Monday - Thursday.
There are two group sessions to choose from. There are two Baby Buff sessions to choose from as well.
Group lessons begin at age three and up. Baby Buffs is available for children ages six months and up. This one-week class requires parent participation and a swim diaper, if necessary.
