COVID-19 Funding Agency Guidance


SRS has received a number of COVID-19 related communications Image of Corona Virus from grant funding agencies. Most of the concerns and/or adjustments involve personnel-payroll, travel, and delays in grant activities. The information is changing rapidly and we will continue to monitor updates that potentially impact your research projects.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: In most cases, grants cannot pay salary/wages to grant personnel for work NOT performed. This can be a tricky issue with our current work circumstances. Documentation of hours actually worked and grant activities performed will be crucial to avoid disallowed costs down the road.

Please know that we are here to help you with your grant concerns, whether they involve current projects that are impacted by the pandemic or upcoming proposal submissions. Featured Grant Funding Opportunities:

  • Equipment Grant Program (USDA NIFA)

    Summary: The Equipment Grant Program (EGP) serves to increase access to shared-use special purpose equipment/instruments for fundamental and applied research for use in the food and agricultural sciences programs at institutions of higher education, including State Cooperative Extension Systems. The program seeks to strengthen the quality and expand the scope of fundamental and applied research at eligible institutions, by providing them with opportunities to acquire one major piece of equipment/instruments that support their research, training, and extension goals and may be too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NIFA grant programs.

    Funding range: up to $500,000

  • Rapid Response to Novel Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) Impacts across Food and Agricultural Systems (USDA NIFA)

    Summary: Seeks data to reliably guide decision-making supported by scientific evidence. This program area priority addresses the need to develop and deploy rapid, reliable, and readily adoptable strategies across the food and agriculture enterprise in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These strategies should mitigate urgent threats from COVID-19 and ensure the availability of an accessible, safe, nutritious, and abundant food supply.

    Call for Engineering Action on the COVID-19 Crisis

    Summary: The National Academy of Engineering was formed under the Congressional Charter of the National Academy of Sciences (collectively the “National Academies”). Along with the medical and scientific expertise that is being brought to bear on this challenge, the engineering community is ideally suited to address these challenges by sharing knowledge, skills, systems approaches, and an innovative mindset to combat the contagion and its impact. This project provides a mechanism to bring together people with great ideas.
