WTAMU Receives Welch Foundation Grant to Benefit Chemistry Program

CANYON, Texas—Faculty members in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at West Texas A&M University have received a three-year grant for the chemistry program in the amount of $90,000 from the Welch Foundation.

The grant is designed to support undergraduate and graduate student research and will run from June 1, 2018 through May 31, 2021. Funds from the grant will support faculty research and provide students stipends for their participation. The Foundation hopes the grant will help increase student interest in chemistry as a career through scholarships, additional lab equipment and chemicals and opportunities for travel to meetings and conferences.

The grant is an extension of the previous grant that Drs. Nick Flynn and David Khan administered with the addition of Dr. Jason Yarbrough as a principal investigator.

“We are very proud to see this renewed and look forward to supporting several students with funds from the grant,” Flynn said.

The Welch Foundation, located in Houston, grants awards to Texas colleges and universities that offer undergraduate degree programs in chemistry or biochemistry.
