CANYON, Texas—The theatre program at West Texas A&M University presents “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 in the Branding Iron Theatre. Additional shows are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and Oct. 10-12 as well as at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 6 and Oct. 13.

Written in 1938, the timeless script shares a universal message about life, love and eternity that still resonates today. The Pulitzer Prize winning play has been described as a humorous and insightful production, which is presented by a large ensemble and led by the narrator-character of the Stage Manager played by WT’s Stephen Crandall, associate professor of theatre and Chair of Art, Theatre and Dance. “Our Town” is the second show of the 2019 season and directed by Royal R. Brantley, Regents Professor of Theatre.

“Influenced by Gertrude Stein, Wilder wrote the play while in Europe. From afar he created ‘pure existing Americans’ for the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire,” Brantley said. “As a result, he ‘fell in love with his country all over again.’ Mixing with the humor, tragedy and Americana of the script are obvious techniques of the theatre that were very European at the time. As a result, Our Town is one of the most unique productions ever staged by the American Theatre.”
