WT Mathematics Professor Honored with Dissertation Award

CANYON, Texas— A WT professor in a tenure-track position with the University will be honored with an award for her doctoral dissertation this November.

Audrey Meador, assistant professor of mathematics at WT, will receive the School Science and Math Association's Dissertation Award at the SSMA's convention in Salt Lake City.

"To have the SSMA's acknowledgement of my work means a lot to me in terms of establishing myself as a researcher in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education," Meador said. "And it means a lot for WTAMU, as it gives the University notoriety of having faculty who are nationally recognized for their research."

Meador, who has worked as an instructor of mathematics at WT since 2012, graduated from Texas Tech University in December 2018 after pursuing her doctorate in curriculum and instruction in mathematics education.

She currently is in a tenure-track position in WT's mathematics department.

Meador's dissertation is titled, "Environmental Variables for STEM Degree Interest and Goal Persistence: Examining the Experiences of Minority Students in the Rural Context." She studied minority students from rural backgrounds and the factors that contributed to interest in STEM fields of study.

"The SSMA Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding doctoral degree research, and is an honor for Ms. Meador," said Dr. Suzanne M. Nesmith, president of the SSMA.

As the award recipient, Meador will receive $500, a one-year membership to SSMA, a convention fee waiver, and an invitation to present a session at the Annual Convention about her dissertation.

The SSMA, founded in 1901, is a professional community of researchers and teachers, focused on improving school science and mathematics.
