WT Bateman Team Earns Honorable Mention in Competition

CANYON, Texas – The Bateman Team at West Texas A&M University earned an honorable mention from the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) for the first time since WT first began competing eight years ago. Out of 66 entries, only 18 received honorable mentions.

For this year’s Bateman Competition, participants promoted the book “Diverse Voices: Profiles of Leadership,” and focused on increasing diversity in the public relations field.

The team of four media communication majors including Agol Aloak, a senior with a broadcast journalism emphasis from Amarillo; Adelyn Hokanson, a senior with an advertising and public relations emphasis from Dumas; Darby Sparkman, a junior with a digital media emphasis form Quanah; and Keila Valdez, a senior with a digital media emphasis from Borger.

“I’m so proud of the hard work this team did to earn national distinction,” Kim Bruce, team adviser and associate lecturer of media communication, said. “Because their public relations campaign is executed in our local community it always has distinct benefits and serves as an ideal learning experience, but this honor is well earned and signifies their effort was outstanding.”

For their month-long campaign, WT’s team led several events on campus and in the community. With these events, including one called “I Am Unique,” the team advocated for diversity in the communications fields, and encouraged students to explore how their creative interests might help them succeed in their careers.

The Bateman Competition is sponsored by the Public Relations Student Society of America in partnership with the Public Relations Society of America.
