Getting His Kicks, University Faculty Member Debuts Book

Dr. Gerlich co-authors book about historic Route 66, in stores soon

CANYON, Texas—A faculty member at West Texas A&M University will release his book “A Matter of Time: Route 66 Through the Lens of Change” online and in stores nationwide starting Oct. 10.

Dr. R. Nicholas Gerlich, Hickman Professor of Marketing, collaborated with Ellen Klinkel, a photographer in Germany, to tell the story of change of one of the country’s most legendary highways. With Gerlich’s 46,000 words and Klinkel’s 177 photographs, the authors touch on 101 distinct locations along the historic Route 66 emphasizing forgotten and familiar places.

Gerlich came to WT in 1989 after earning his Ph.D. in marketing at Indiana University. He was instrumental in developing WT’s online presence and has a flair for supplementing his courses with different mediums such as videos and podcasts. Gerlich’s other impacts include working with the City of Amarillo in designing its bike lane system.

“I have been studying and traveling Route 66 for a decade, not just for nostalgic reasons, but more importantly to document the evolution of commerce, human migration, and transportation in the last century. I am lucky that I live so close to the midpoint of Route 66, and have been able to travel it extensively. This book allows me to share what I have seen and learned,” Gerlich said.

“A Matter of Time” follows the journey many have for decades starting in Chicago, meandering through the Midwest and Southwest before ending in Santa Monica, Calif. Gerlich’s in-depth knowledge of “America’s Main Street” captioning the historic photos invites new perspective.
