Almas Named Interim Dean for Agriculture and Natural Sciences

CANYON, Texas—Officials at West Texas A&M University have named Dr. Lal Almas as interim dean for the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. His appointment was effective immediately.Dr. Lal Almas

Almas, who serves as associate dean of the college, fills the position vacated by the recent death of Dr. Dean Hawkins. He will oversee all facets of the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, which includes the Department of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Chemistry and Physics.

“This is a difficult time for the University but especially for those in the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences,” Dr. Walter Wendler, WTAMU president, said. “It’s nice knowing we have the expertise and leadership of Dr. Almas to help move the college forward and continue the work that meant so much to Dr. Hawkins. I am confident he will do an outstanding job.”

Almas joined the Department of Agricultural Sciences in 2001 and was named associate dean for the college in June of 2016. He traveled to Azerbaijan in 2012 as a Fulbright Scholar, where he taught a quantitative agricultural business and environmental economics course. In addition to his role as a faculty member in the agricultural business and economics area, Almas also has served as a Faculty Advising Fellow in the Office of Advising Services. He is the author of several publications and has presented numerous times at regional, national and international conferences.

“It is indeed a great honor and privilege for me to serve as interim dean for the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences,” Almas said. “I consider this responsibility with all the challenges as an opportunity to serve our students and faculty in a broader spectrum. I am thankful to Dr. Wade Shaffer and Dr. Walter Wendler for their trust and confidence in me and the team in the college. Under their leadership, we are fully determined to continue Dr. Hawkins’ vision and legacy of serving our students, faculty and staff, alumni/donors and external stakeholders.”

Almas earned a D.V.M. in 1982 from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan, an M.S. in agricultural business and economics in 1994 from WTAMU and an M.S. in statistics and Ph.D. in agricultural and applied economics in 1999 from Texas Tech University. His research interests include production agriculture, environmental and resource economics, agribusiness analysis, water management and planning, economic impact assessment and policy analysis, food security, international agriculture and rural development, statistical methods and agricultural marketing and trade.

“Dr. Almas is an experienced and knowledgeable administrator,” Dr. Wade Shaffer, provost/vice president for academic affairs, said. “I look forward to working with him and know that as interim dean, Dr. Almas will focus on advancing the goals of the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and the mission of West Texas A&M University.”
